6th Reading Competition of the Anglo-German Club for the Paderborn District

At this year’s 6th English Reading Competition hosted by the Anglo-German Club Paderborn, sixth-grade students from all nine grammar schools in the Paderborn district competed against one another in the historic town hall of Paderborn. In the first round, the participants read excerpts from an English text of their choice; in the second round, they read from an English young adult book intended for their age group that was new to them. The jury, consisting of English teachers Katja Zweigle and Lindsay McCran, as well as Lt Col Andy McCran, discussed the performances at length and ultimately selected Mats Klich as the winner for his excellent expressive reading of the unfamiliar text.
At the subsequent awards ceremony, Ina Maiwald (initiator/competition director), together with Col Tom Jefford (commander of Normandy Barracks Sennelager), presented the finalists with book vouchers, theater tickets, other prizes, and certificates. Mats Klich (Gymnasium Theodorianum) took first place, ahead of Azzaya Battugs (Gymnasium Schloss Neuhaus, 2nd place) and Lennox Werli (Pelizaeus Gymnasium, 3rd place).

The English reading competition organized by the Paderborn Anglo-German Club Paderborn was launched in 2020 by Ina Maiwald, English teacher and trainer for English teachers, and has since become a regular feature of the annual program at grammar schools in the Paderborn district. In preparation, reading competitions are held at each school, and the top performers from these competitions are invited to participate in the Anglo-German Club’s final round at town hall of Paderborn.
