English Reading Competition

For the first time this summer, an English Reading Competition was held for sixth-grade students at Paderborn’s grammar schools and comprehensive schools.
Mayor Michael Dreier presented the finalists Leandra Schmidt (1st place, Pelizaeus-Gymnasium), Nele Wibbe (2nd place) and Esther Rojahn (3rd place, both Reismann-Gymnasium) with their certificates and prizes at the Paderborn City Hall.
The competition, under the direction of Ina Maiwald, Specialist English Teacher Training and organised by the Anglo-German Club, took place digitally this year due to corona and consisted of two rounds of reading aloud. In the first round, the participants read out English texts they had selected themselves. In the second round, various passages were read from an English book selected by the jury, which the participants did not know beforehand. Even under these special conditions, the students performed with aplomb.
The jury, consisting of the English teachers Lindsay McCran and Pia Milsch, as well as Chris McCarthy, deputy headmaster of the Attenborough School Sennelager, was very impressed by the high level of the young students.
This inter-school reading competition will take place again next year after the successful premiere and should become a continuous event for the Paderborn schools.
